Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles! Our summer programs are week-long day camps for girls and gender expansive youth ages 8-17. All programs are held at Immaculate Conception School which is situated between MacArthur Park and downtown L.A.

There are volunteer positions available for folks of any gender, and we prioritize the placement of women, non-binary, and trans volunteers in positions involving direct engagement with campers.

We are looking for rad volunteers who put the best interests of youth and their physical and emotional safety above all else, who understand and believe in our mission and who will show up every day, on time and ready to work. A variety of volunteer positions are available. Some require musical or filmmaking knowledge, and many do not.

Application Process

In addition to submitting an online application, all new applicants are required to attend a group interview on zoom. Dates and times are in the application.

Volunteers that are accepted are required to complete a background check prior to the start of camp. You must be 18+ to be a volunteer. All volunteers are strongly encouraged to be up to date with the most recent COVID-19 vaccine.

Please note that preference is given to volunteers in the greater Los Angeles area. If you are applying from outside of the Los Angeles area, please consider applying at a girls rock camp closer to you. Visit the Girls Rock Camp Alliance website to find a camp near you, and help us grow the girls rock camp community worldwide!

Orientation & Training

There are two mandatory volunteer orientations:

  • Online: Wednesday, June 12, 7:00 – 9:00pm
  • In-person: Saturday, June 15, 1:00 – 6:00pm

We will talk about what to expect from the week, how to have a fun and safe camp session, teaching strategies, troubleshooting, etc. This is also a time when volunteers get to know each other, start collaborating.

There is a mandatory volunteer orientation and training session on the Sunday before the week of camp starts at Immaculate Conception School.  Please consider this to be the first day of your volunteer shift. We will talk about what to expect from the week, how to have a fun and safe camp session, teaching strategies, troubleshooting, etc. This is also a time when volunteers get to know each other, start collaborating, and do last minute camp set up.

Some positions require musical experience but many do not. Preference is given to volunteers who are available full time.

Mentorship Positions

These are positions that require direct engagement with campers. At RCGLA we prioritize the leadership of women, non-binary, and trans people for these positions. Click on a title below to learn more:

Musical skill and songwriting experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

Consider yourself the Pert Plus* of Rock Camp 2023! A Band Coach Deluxe mentors a band and is also an instrument instructor (vocals, drums, bass, keys or guitar). You will be paired with a counselor to: help your band prepare an original song, manage a small instruction class, and attend workshops. You will team up with your counselor to model a cohesive and supportive creative environment, supervise safety throughout the day for your campers, and attend morning and end of day staff meetings each day. Being able to work collaboratively is essential. Knowledge of more than one instrument is preferable.

Musical skill and songwriting experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time.

If you are available full-time, we prefer that you apply as a Band Coach Deluxe. If you have limited availability, you can select band coach only. A Band Coach mentors a band throughout the week as they write an original song and prepare to perform it live. You will team up with your counselor to model a cohesive and supportive creative environment, supervise safety while with your campers, and attend a staff meeting each day. Being able to work collaboratively is essential. Knowledge of more than one instrument is preferable.

No musical experience necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

This is one of the most rewarding volunteer positions at camp! You will serve as a mentor for your assigned band of campers, make sure they are where they need to be at all times, and attend morning and end of day staff meetings each day. Counselors also partner with a band coach to: help campers write and rehearse their original song during band practice, assist in instrument instruction, help manage campers and supervise safety throughout the day, as well as help model a cohesive and supportive creative environment.

Proficiency on a musical instrument required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time.

If you are available full time, we prefer that you apply as a Band Coach Deluxe. If you have limited availability, you can select instrument instruction only. Our campers possess a varying range of ages and skill levels, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know: guitar, bass, keys, drums, and vocals. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction.

Some filmmaking experience necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

Cheer your crew on to music video victory! You are responsible for seeing your campers through, from the beginning to the end of their project. You’ll be their guide as your campers choose a song, come up with a concept, storyboard or shot list, film the video, and edit their final cut. Seeking inspirational leaders who can help their campers stay on track! While some filmmaking experience is necessary, the ability to keep your crew organized and having fun is most important. Familiarity with camera and editing is great, but not necessary. You’ll have a camera mentor and an editing mentor by your side!

Proficiency with camera operation and lighting necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred.

You will be placed with a small crew of campers, and will be their personal point person for camera instruction! You should be a proficient camera person, experienced and confident with camera operation, knowledge of lighting, and able to answer all sorts of camper questions! Our campers possess a varying range of ages and skill levels, and some have never touched a camera in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. You may do some collaborative teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. Get ready to pass on your skills to the next generation of filmmakers!

Editing proficiency, confident working in Adobe Premiere; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred.

You will be placed with a small crew of campers, and will be their personal point person for editing instruction! You should be a proficient editor, experienced and confident in Adobe Premiere, and able to answer all sorts of camper questions! Our campers possess a varying range of ages and skill levels, and most have never edited before in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. You may do some collaborative teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. Get ready to pass on your skills to the next generation of filmmakers!

Graduate school or clinical experience preferred; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred.

Be a part of Team Feelings at camp! Provide support to campers, bands, and volunteers who may be dealing with conflicts, or any emotional, behavioral, or psychological issues that rise to the surface during camp. You must have experience with psychology, social work, or conflict resolution.

Music production experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time or full-time.

Assembly sound crew is responsible for setting up our main stage PA system every morning before campers arrive; running sound every day during morning assembly, lunch, afternoon assembly, plus occasional additional activities; setting up and sound-checking lunch time performers; breaking down the main stage PA at the end of the day and safely moving gear inside. The main stage PA consists of a digital mixing board, two main speakers, 3-4 monitor wedges, and several mics and DIs for vocals and instruments.

Own camera gear required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full- or part-time.

We’re looking for professional or professional-adjacent photographers who would love to document the day-to-day action of camp, including the showcases. Rad photos from camp help show the world what we’re up to! It’s so important! You have your own gear, you know how to shoot, you are comfy around the kiddos. Your schedule can be somewhat flexible.

Video and editing expert; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full- or part-time. Own camera and editing software preferred.

Film and edit daily recap videos for camp. Deliver recap video nightly to social media coordinator.

No musical experience necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

This is one of the most rewarding volunteer positions at camp! You will serve as a mentor for your assigned band of girls, make sure they are where they need to be at all times, and attend the end of the day staff meeting each day. Camp counselors also partner with a band coach to help campers write and rehearse their original song during band practice, as well as help model a cohesive and supportive creative environment.

Band coaches are assigned a band to help prepare an original song for the showcase. You will help the girls during band selection on the first day, and partner with a camp counselor to assist them each camp day in learning how to play as a group, both musically and interpersonally. Being able to work collaboratively is essential. Knowledge of more than one instrument is preferable.

Proficiency on a musical instrument required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time.

Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. We are looking for women to teach: guitar, bass, keys, drums, and vocals. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. You will also meet or email with your fellow instrument instructors at least once before orientation to decide on curriculum and what style and level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. Instrument Instructors must be available to teach Monday through Friday, for about 3 hours per day.  This position combines well with band coach, support crew, or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering!

Music production experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time or full-time.

Own camera gear required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full- or part-time.

You will be placed with a small crew of campers, and will be their personal point person for editing instruction! You should be a proficient editor, experienced and confident in Adobe Premiere, and able to answer all sorts of camper questions! Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and most have never edited before in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. Get ready to pass on your skills to the next generation of filmmakers! Monday, Wednesday – Friday mandatory; Tuesday optional, Saturday showcase mandatory.

Graduate school or clinical experience preferred; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full- or part-time.

Be a part of Team Feelings at camp! Provide support to campers, bands, and volunteers who may be dealing with conflicts, or any emotional, behavioral, or psychological issues that rise to the surface during camp. You have experience with psychology, social work, or conflict resolution.

Additional Positions

These positions are equally as vital as the direct mentorship positions, but they may entail less interaction with campers. Open to volunteers of all genders. Click on a title below to learn more:

Music production experience preferred but not required, all genders, full-time preferred.

Gear lovers unite! You will be part of a team of people setting up, breaking down, moving around and trouble-shooting musical equipment throughout each day of the week. Desirable though not required skills: setting up a simple PA system, running sound, comfortable carrying heavy objects. Any additional technical knowledge and skill equals bonus points, but newbies welcome – we’ll teach you what you need to know.

No musical experience necessary, all genders, full-time preferred.

These are the most critical roles to fill! Support and Safety keeps camp running smoothly! You will be on a team of awesome folx making sure that all campers and volunteers are able to have a safe and fun experience at camp. You will help facilitate camper check in and out, set up workshop activities and materials, supervise and direct campers during outside activities, and set up and maintain the volunteer break area including lunch and snacks. This team is also responsible for helping to carry out COVID-19 safety protocols, details of which will be finalized closer to camp.

No musical experience necessary, all genders, full-time preferred.

The Camp Healthcare Provider will be available throughout the day as a point person for medical emergencies, minor accidents, helping campers with special medical needs and prescriptions, and assisting Team Feelings as needed. They will also help manage COVID-19 safety protocols which may include wellness checks, collecting test results, etc. – details of which will be finalized closer to camp. A medical doctor or nurse would be ideal for this position, but anyone with relevant skills and experience should apply.

Confident camera operator, all genders, Friday PM only.

Operate a camera at the Rock Camp Showcase. Arrive early to set up equipment, film the showcase, assist in equipment breakdown. Camera operating experience necessary.

No musical experience necessary, all genders, part-time.

This is a supplemental position open to counselors, coaches, instrument instructors, or for volunteers who have limited hours available to spend at camp each day. Supervision of campers who must be dropped off before or picked up after regular camp hours.

All genders, part-time or full-time.

Seeking ninja tech types to keep things running smoothly for our campers! Lots of different opportunities here! Seeking volunteers familiar with camera, lighting, and grip to set up equipment and gear prior to camper arrival, and to help break it down and pack it up after camp. Seeking post-production warriors to offload footage onto computers and import into Premiere, sync video footage to music tracks, and export final music videos. This is a great position for volunteers who can come part-time, or who have early availability beginning at 9am, or who can arrive in the afternoon and stay late until 6:30 or 7pm.
