Be a Volunteer!

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles! Our summer programs are week-long day camps for campers ages 8-17. All programs are held at Immaculate Conception School which is situated between MacArthur Park and downtown L.A.

Girls and youth with marginalized gender identities are welcome in this space, and we look for volunteers in whom our campers can see themselves reflected. We believe “if you can see it you can be it”. There are volunteer positions available for folks of any gender, and we prioritize the placement of women, non-binary, and trans volunteers in positions involving direct engagement with campers.

We are looking for rad volunteers who put the best interests of youth and their physical and emotional safety above all else, who understand and believe in our mission and who will show up every day, on time and ready to work. A variety of volunteer positions are available. Some require musical or filmmaking knowledge, and many do not.

Application Process

In addition to filling out the online application, all new applicants are required to be interviewed. Details are TBD.

Volunteers that are accepted are required to complete a background check prior to the start of camp. You must be 18+ to be a volunteer.

Please note that preference is given to volunteers in the greater Los Angeles area. If you are applying from outside of the Los Angeles area, please consider applying at a girls rock camp closer to you. Visit the Girls Rock Camp Alliance website to find a camp near you, and help us grow the girls rock camp community worldwide!

In addition to filling out the online application, all new applicants are required to attend a group interview in person. There are three dates to choose from, which will be listed in the application. Due to the large number of applicants, we cannot schedule any other interviews.

Orientation & Training

There is a mandatory volunteer orientation and training session on the Sunday before the week of camp starts at Immaculate Conception School.  Please consider this to be the first day of your volunteer shift. We will talk about what to expect from the week, how to have a fun and safe camp session, teaching strategies, troubleshooting, etc. This is also a time when volunteers get to know each other, start collaborating, and do last minute camp set up.

Non-Discrimination Policy

Rock n’ Roll Camp for Girls Los Angeles does not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national and/or ethnic origin, age, citizenship, marital status, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, or gender identity/expression in the administration of any of its educational programs, admissions policies, financial aid, and other Camp-related policies and programs, as well as volunteer and employment-related policies and activities.

Volunteer Positions

Some positions require musical experience but many do not, and some require a full-time commitment while others may be part-time. All volunteers must be available for orientation and training. Counselors and band coaches are also required to attend the Showcase. (But seriously, who would want to miss the showcase??)

Full-time positions require you to be at camp Monday through Friday from 10am to approximately 5:30pm. You are encouraged to arrive between 9:30-10am if possible. Campers go home at 5pm but volunteers must stay for a brief meeting at the end of each day so we can go over any issues or questions.

Mentorship Roles

These are roles that require direct engagement with campers. At RCGLA we prioritize the leadership of women, non-binary, and trans people for these roles. Click on a title below to learn more:

No musical experience necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

This is one of the most rewarding volunteer positions at camp! You will serve as a mentor for your assigned band of girls, make sure they are where they need to be at all times, and attend the end of the day staff meeting each day. Camp counselors also partner with a band coach to help campers write and rehearse their original song during band practice, as well as help model a cohesive and supportive creative environment.

Musical skill and songwriting experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time.

Band coaches are assigned a band to help prepare an original song for the showcase. You will help the girls during band selection on the first day, and partner with a camp counselor to assist them each camp day in learning how to play as a group, both musically and interpersonally. Being able to work collaboratively is essential. Knowledge of more than one instrument is preferable.

Proficiency on a musical instrument required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time.

Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and many have never touched a musical instrument in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. We are looking for women to teach: guitar, bass, keys, drums, and vocals. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. You will also meet or email with your fellow instrument instructors at least once before orientation to decide on curriculum and what style and level of experience each instructor is comfortable teaching. Instrument Instructors must be available to teach Monday through Friday, for about 3 hours per day.  This position combines well with band coach, support crew, or workshop leader for a full day of volunteering!

Music production experience required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; part-time or full-time.

Assembly sound crew is responsible for setting up our primary PA system on an outdoor stage every morning before campers arrive; running sound every day during morning assembly, lunch time performance, afternoon assembly, plus occasional additional activities; setting up and sound-checking lunch time performers; breaking down the primary PA at the end of the day and safely moving gear inside in an organized manner. The primary PA consists of a digital mixing board, two main speakers, three monitor wedges, and three mics.

Own camera gear required; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full- or part-time.

We’re looking for professional or professional-adjacent photographers who would love to document the day-to-day action of camp, including the showcases. Rad photos from camp help show the world what we’re up to! It’s so important! You have you own gear, you know how to shoot, you are comfy around the kiddos. Your schedule can be somewhat flexible.

Video and editing expert; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred. Own camera and editing software preferred.

Film and edit daily recap videos for camp. Deliver recap video nightly to social media coordinator.

Some filmmaking experience necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time.

Cheer your crew on to music video victory! You are responsible for seeing your campers through, from the beginning to the end of their project. You’ll be their guide as your campers choose a song, come up with a concept, storyboard or shotlist, film the video, and edit their final cut. Seeking inspirational leaders who can help their campers stay on track! While some filmmaking experience is necessary, the ability to keep your crew organized and having fun is most important. Familiarity with camera and editing is great, but not necessary. You’ll have a camera mentor and an editing mentor by your side!

Proficiency with camera operation and lighting necessary; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred.

You will be placed with a small crew of campers, and will be their personal point person for camera instruction! You should be a proficient camera person, experienced and confident with camera operation, knowledge of lighting, and able to answer all sorts of camper questions! Our campers possess a varying range of age and skill level, and some have never touched a camera in their lives. Now it’s time to teach them what you know. You may do some collaborative large-group teaching, as well as small-group and/or individual instruction. Get ready to pass on your skills to the next generation of filmmakers! Monday – Wednesday mandatory, Thursday – Friday optional, Saturday showcase mandatory.

Editing proficiency, confident working in Adobe Premiere; women, non-binary, and trans people preferred; full-time preferred.
